The problem
Some learners understand the work, know the answers and have prepared for the exam — but struggle to access the questions independently.
Exam Reader helps remove that barrier by giving learners controlled, consistent reading assistance when they need it.
The goal isn't to make exams easier.
It's to make the content accessible.
The product
A digital reading solution designed for assessment environments.
Exam Reader converts approved exam papers into a secure reading experience, allowing learners to listen to questions through headphones while continuing to work independently.
No complicated setup for learners. No human reader sitting beside them throughout the exam.
A reader designed for exams
Reads exactly what is on the page — without paraphrasing or interpreting the question.
Learners can replay a question when they need to, without waiting for someone else to read it again.
Teachers approve the exam content before it reaches the learner.
Designed specifically for assessment environments, with controls that help protect exam integrity.
No internet connection is required during the examination.
Built with South African learners and classrooms in mind.
Reading support
Providing a human reader can place additional demands on schools, staff and exam arrangements. Exam Reader provides a consistent alternative for approved learners:
| Human Reader | Exam Reader |
|---|---|
| Requires a staff member | Learner works independently |
| Reading can vary between readers | Consistent reading |
| May accidentally paraphrase | Reads the approved text |
| Learner must ask for repetition | Learner can replay independently |
| Requires ongoing staff availability | No reader needed throughout the exam |
It doesn't replace supervision.
It replaces the reading.
South Africa
Exam Reader was designed with the realities of South African assessment environments in mind.
Not just a reading tool. A school-based assessment solution.
Privacy
Exam Reader is designed around a school-controlled environment.
Learner information, exam papers, approved content and generated audio remain within your school's system rather than being stored in a public cloud service.
How it works
Upload the exam paper.
The teacher reviews the extracted content.
Approve the questions and any flagged content.
Assign the exam to the appropriate learner.
The learner listens through headphones and completes the exam independently.
That's it.
Try it first
Run a free pilot.
Use Exam Reader during a mock exam or controlled assessment and see how it works with your learners, teachers and existing exam procedures.
We'll help you get started, configure the system and support your team through the pilot.
Who it is for
Exam Reader may be suitable for learners who have an approved reader accommodation and experience barriers when accessing written assessment material.
It can support learners who struggle with reading due to a range of learning needs.
Every learner deserves the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
Exam Reader is a reading tool. It does not grant a reader accommodation. Schools remain responsible for following their own concession process and the rules of the relevant examining body.

Questions
It doesn't replace supervision. It replaces the reading. A teacher still prepares and approves the paper beforehand, and an invigilator still supervises the room. What changes is that a staff member no longer has to sit beside each learner reading the paper aloud for the full sitting.
Most of a paper is extracted and read correctly without any intervention. The teacher's time goes into the flagged items — diagrams, maps, data tables and matching columns — where a human has to decide what the learner should hear. Our own benchmark for a sustainable workflow is under 30 minutes for a Grade 4–9 paper and under an hour for Grade 10–12.
The server runs OCR over the page images to pull out any text inside them, and flags the visual for teacher review. The teacher writes the description the learner will hear. Nothing visual is described to a learner without a person having approved the wording.
No. Your learner data stays at school. Candidates, papers, approved text and audio are stored on the school's own server. Page images are processed on that same machine. The only case where anything leaves your network is if you deliberately enable the optional Azure cloud voice, in which case segment text is sent to Microsoft to be turned into audio.
Once the exam starts the app runs borderless full screen and topmost, hides admin navigation, blocks the usual close and minimise commands, and logs any attempt to leave the exam screen. It is designed for a supervised room — the invigilator remains the final control, and stronger Windows kiosk lockdown can be layered on if your district requires it.
Audio is cached before the sitting and the client tolerates a temporary network drop without ending an active session. We ask schools to put the server on a UPS and to disable sleep and Windows Update during the exam period — those two items are on the deployment checklist for a reason.
Simple school licensing: from R10,000 per school per year. The licence includes the platform, school installation, teacher tools, learner access, support, onboarding and updates. Book a free demonstration or pilot and we will put a written quote together.
Yes. See it in your school before you commit. Use Exam Reader during a mock exam or controlled assessment, and we will help you get started, configure the system and support your team through the pilot.
Give approved learners the opportunity to access their exams independently, confidently and consistently.
